       Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory was installed as Atlanta's sixth archbishop Jan. 17, 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended St. Carthage Grammar School and Quigley Preparatory Seminary of the Lake Seminary. Three years after his ordination to the Priesthood, he began graduate studies at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute (Sant' Anselmo) in Rome. It was there that he earned his Doctorate in Sacred Liturgy in 1980.

On November 17, 1998, Bishop Gregory was elected Vice President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Bishop Gregory was elected the 1st African American President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB), November 2001.

He previously served one term as Chairman of the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy (1991-93). Bishop Gregory's other recent committee assignments include the Committee on Doctrine, the Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual Abuse, and the United States Catholic Conference Committee on International Policy.
